• General background: The gigya shortcode 3 – widgets.
• Paste shortcode into text widget (or html post/page editor). For suitable dimensions check my post on sidebar width.
• Some of these widgets may not display correctly in Explorer – use at your own risk (till Explorer learns to behave, or till users learn not to use Explorer).

  1. These are awesome panos. Especially the spinning globe!

  2. Yeah – but check the collections on page 5 too!

  3. The clocks have suddenly disappeared (in my blog too). Any ideas? :-(

  4. @Galois: Thanks for the alert! At the moment no gigya objects are showing up (I just got a similar complaint in my “Alternative audio players” post), but I don’t know what’s wrong. Let’s wait and see if it’s a temporary glitch or if WP can’t tolerate that I keep finding workarounds (Matt himself has claimed they killed my position-absolute tricks, and another staff member has claimed they’ll kill my page-tabs-as-extra-links trick).

  5. Great. This just caps off a very bad day. No one is likely to die from not having Flickr slideshows, YouTube in sidebar, cool calendars. But did the boy miss the lessons about sharing his toys in nursery school?
    (explirtives deleted: they’d only make me feel worse)

    Maybe it is only a glitch…
    sigh

    Yes. I remember those “warnings”…

    Posted by Galois | August 19, 2010, 03:36
  7. @Tess: Expl..(what?) deleted, but still for a moderator you’re being too dangerously explicit.

    @Galois: The position-absolute story was particularly enjoyable. First Matt said they’d kill that code, then tellyworth explained “because bad guys can use it to do bad things”, which was a lie (since they said they’d still allow it if you have the CSS upgrade), then a month later Matt announced they did kill the code, which isn’t true!

  8. But let’s not jump into conclusions. I’ll wait one day then I’ll ask Support.

    (But if it proves it’s something they did on purpose, I’ll close this blog.)

  9. I just don’t believe it! A glitch? Why use wordpress if it is so glitch-prone? Shame on wordpress.

    And if they are doing it on purpose, well, how come the vodpods are working? Or do they mean that vodpods are safe but gigya isn’t????????????

    In case you are really closing this blog, I should turn your blog into a pdf ebook for future reference!

    Posted by Netty Gritty | August 19, 2010, 14:49
  10. @NG: Doesn’t seem to be on purpose – see my previous comment.

    Glitch-prone? Well, WP these days is preoccupied with how to erase the name of Chris Pearson from the face of the earth because he dared disagree with Matt, and how to fix the widgets of thousands of users who lost them in the stupid Cutline to Coraline switch…

    As for my blog, if and when I close it, closing means no new posts and no commenting; but it will remain online.

  15. Gigya is back!
    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/gigya-shortcode-no-longer-works?replies=12#post-498600

    Panos,
    how can I make this one work:
    http://revolvermaps.com/

    [gigya src="http://rd.revolvermaps.com/f/g.swf" quality="high" width="280" height="280" wmode="window"]

    (did I get this idea from you

    Posted by Tess | August 19, 2010, 17:02
  16. Most obviously back! (What can’t you make work?)

    Posted by Panos | August 19, 2010, 17:46
  17. Yes. Back.
    It shows only “Detroit / Michigan” even when my other counters show people on my blog…

    Posted by Tess | August 20, 2010, 03:25
  18. You’re missing the flashvars in the code, but that’s not the problem. I added the widget to my sidebar (with its flashvars and everything) and left it for a couple of hours but got no hits either. I’m afraid I can’t tell what’s wrong with it.

    Posted by Panos | August 20, 2010, 05:33
  19. eh! no worries. But thank you.

    At one point I had added flashvars and a few other things (memory fails), and it still didn’t work.

    It was a puzzle for me to work out; it was a little thing to play with (w/o emotions). If even you can’t make it work, well then, I won’t think I’m stupid.

    hmm. it’s the process not the product

    Posted by Tess | August 20, 2010, 06:04
  20. Just tried it again, and now it’s working. But the hits on the 3d and the 2d maps aren’t the same. This thing doesn’t seem to be dependable. I’ll leave it in my sidebar till you see it then I’ll get rid of it.

    Posted by Panos | August 20, 2010, 13:03
  21. Hi panos. I love the rotating sidebar viewer location widget! I’ve gone to the site and got the proper flash code for the version I want, but I’m lost when it comes to translating this:

    Large Visitor Globe

    into this:

    [gigya src="WIDGET URL HERE" width="NUMBER HERE" height="NUMBER HERE" wmode="transparent" ]

    Can you help me out please?

    Posted by IzaakMak | August 20, 2010, 13:50
  22. Sorry about that. I don’t know how to make the code display as text. I’m trying to get the second seasonal globe (second from the right) in the 198px x 198px (Twenty Ten theme) size.

    Posted by IzaakMak | August 20, 2010, 14:04
  23. You love it, but it’s probably not very trustworthy – see previous comments. Anyway, the code should be like that:

    [gigya src="http://rd.revolvermaps.com/f/g.swf" allowScriptAccess="always" allowNetworking="all" quality="high" wmode="window" width="190" height="190" flashvars="m=0&amp;i=3crgoHx1uah&amp;r=0&amp;v=false&amp;b=000000&amp;n=false&amp;s=190&amp;c=ff0000" ]<br /><img src="http://jd.revolvermaps.com/c/3crgoHx1uah.gif" width="1" height="1" alt="" /><a href="http://www.revolvermaps.com/?target=enlarge&amp;i=3crgoHx1uah&amp;color=ff0000&amp;m=0">Large Visitor Globe</a>

    That’s the version I’ve temporarily put in my sidebar. With the options you have selected some variables will be different, but you get the idea.

    PS One way to make code show up in a comment is to enclose it in the sourcecode shortcode:

    [sourcecode language=”html”]
    CODE HERE
    [/sourcecode]

    Posted by Panos | August 20, 2010, 15:29
  24. Thanks so much! I’ve got it working on my test blog, including the mods for my choice of globe. The one thing I couldn’t figure out it how to center it in the sidebar. None of the stuff I’ve tried seems to work. The one you’re seems to be centered nicely!

    Thanks also for the tip on placing sourcecode in a comment. I’ve added it to my “code snippets” file – a great deal of which came straight from your blog!

    Posted by IzaakMak | August 20, 2010, 15:59
  25. You’re welcome!

    The width of the sidebar content in 2010 is 200px. If you go to the globe site and get a new code after you select 200×200, the globe should be centered. Otherwise, the code to center objects is this:

    <div align="center">
    CODE HERE
    </div>

    Or maybe you should add the widget to your regular blog so I can see.

    PS again: For the way I display code in comments (and posts), see “Html converter” under Links 2 in my left sidebar. (Not without pitfalls though.)

    Posted by Panos | August 20, 2010, 16:45
  26. Oh my goodness, I had

    <div align="center;">

    I’ll remember that for next time! For now, I just adjusted the code to 200px. It’s on my regular blog now.

    Thanks again!

    Posted by IzaakMak | August 20, 2010, 17:06
  27. @Panos,
    Thanks. Still shows only Detroit. But you can remove it from your sidebar if you want.

    Posted by Tess | August 20, 2010, 18:44
  28. Never mind. It now shows 2 more readers. Definitely does not match other stats…

    (you’ll laugh but I had the code right in the first place and thought it didn’t work so I fooled around with it ’til it made no sense. Just realized I was testing it in my private test blog0

  29. Hi Panos….. firstly, many thanks for your wonderful help advice and information.

    I have been trying to add a ‘Countdown Timer’ into my blog, and I used the one available from http://www.clocklink.com/ – this one to be exact: http://www.clocklink.com/taggen.php?agree=1&clkid=9001e&fontcolor=&bgcolor=&wlppr=&AcceptBtn.x=33&AcceptBtn.y=11&AcceptBtn=Accept (Countdown 9001E)

    The HTML generated was this:

    obj=new Object;obj.clockfile=”9001e-blue.swf”;obj.TimeZone=”GMT0200″;obj.width=288;obj.height=18;obj.Target=”2011,8,21,15,47,17″;obj.Title=”Title”;obj.Message=”Message”;obj.wmode=”transparent”;showClock(obj);

    …… and I changed it to this:

    [gigya src="http://www.clocklink.com/clocks/9001e-blue.swf?TimeZone=GMT0200&Target=2010,10,01,00,00,00&Title=Italian%20GP&Message=&" width="320" height="20"]

    Now, I am getting the blue/white bar up on my site, but for I can’t get any writing in the white window, (Italian Grand Prix) or the countdown time numbers.

    I have tried every permutation, but nothing is happening.
    I wonder if you could tell me what I am doing wrong and point me in the right direction.

    Many thanks.

  30. Edit to the above post!

    Hahahahahahaha! – putting in the script gave you exactly what I am getting!

    Posted by Zabo Racing | August 22, 2010, 02:02
  31. Yes it gave me what you’re getting, because the gigya shortcode works in comments. To make it show up, you need to convert the symbols into the HTML entities for them.

    This is what you need to paste:

    [gigya src="http://www.clocklink.com/clocks/9001e-blue.swf&quot; flashvars="TimeZone= GMT0200&Target=2011,8,21,15,47,17&Title=YOUR TITLE HERE" width="288" height="18" wmode="transparent" ]

    No message shows up, so I omitted it from the above code. You can write it as plain text below the widget. Or you can try your luck with other countdowns:
    http://www.freeflashtoys.com/myspace-countdown-clocks
    http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/countdown-pro

    Posted by Panos | August 23, 2010, 18:11
  32. Panos! – once again you excel yourself.

    That worked a treat!……… I followed your instructions and used a timer off ‘freeflashtoys’
    Perfect!

    Thank you so very much indeed.

  36. hi panos, i have tried about 6 times to change this code below into a short code can you help out please and is there any way of removing the white box around it

    i tried to remove the white box from around your clock but failed , thanks for your help , harry

    http://www.clocklink.com/clocks/free001-red.swf?TimeZone=UnitedKingdom_Belfast&

    Posted by harrythehandyman | November 4, 2010, 02:10
  37. Hi Harry,

    Shortcode is:

    [gigya src="http://www.clocklink.com/clocks/0005-red.swf&quot; flashvars="TimeZone=UnitedKingdom_Belfast&" width="150" height="150" wmode="transparent" ]

    Since the code specifies a transparent bg, there should be no white box around the clock. Except if you’re talking about stupid Explorer. In theory you can eliminate the white box by specifying a colored bg; but your sidebars have a gradient bg, so again any bg color you add to the widget won’t blend completely.

    Posted by Panos | November 4, 2010, 10:17
  38. Hi Harry,
    I got your message last night, but it was too late for my brain to think! Glad you got your answer from Panos.
    Tess

    P.S. You are the first person to leave a chat message with the chat button. I wasn’t sure it worked.

    Posted by Tess | November 4, 2010, 16:40
  39. yes i’m talking about stupid explorer but i like , it dont like firefox , anyway i put the code in and there’s a large white box around it is there anyway to make it the same size as the clock i tried these below , but no good

    you can see it here
    http://harrystestblog.wordpress.com/

    wmode=”opaque”bgcolor=ffcccc lan=”en”
    wmode=”opaque”bgcolor=”ffcccc”

    Posted by harrythehandyman | November 4, 2010, 22:18
  40. Hi Harry,

    Sorry, but I’m not seeing the clock in your link.

    But if you are looking at your blog with Explorer, then the background won’t be transparent. It will be white. Do you use Explorer when looking at my blog? I use Macs and Explorer no longer supports us, but I went to the public library and my clock has a white rectangle around it.

    For more useful browsers (FireFox, Safari, and so on) I set the background color of my choice in a table (along with other what-ca-me-call-its like contact form, image, chat, and so on). I did not try to change wmode in the gigya code itself. So you should put the background color in a span, paragraph, or div tag as you like.

    Oh, my. Apologies to Panos if my explanation here is confusing. Too much time working and stress is making me less than the sharpest tack in the box.

    t

    Posted by Tess | November 5, 2010, 03:09
  41. @Tess: As you said, adding a div with bg color works in “more useful browsers” only – won’t solve the problem in IE (since IE doesn’t understand what “transparent” means).

    @Harry: I would try bg color in the shortcode plus a border to the whole thing:

    <div style="width:150px;height:150px;border:1px solid #c30a0f;">[gigya src="http://www.clocklink.com/clocks/0005-red.swf&quot; flashvars="TimeZone=UnitedKingdom_Belfast" width="150" height="150" wmode="opaque" bgcolor="ffcccc" ]</div>

    But, like Tess, I’m a Mac user, so I don’t know if this is ok in IE; try it and let us know please.

    Posted by Panos | November 5, 2010, 09:58
  42. ok panos and tess , it worked with the colored bg ok , but there’s always a but :) , the border does not go right round only half way weather its full size or reduced , also its not centred and i found this in the globe code to centre it below it in my site

    btw i increased the px to 2

    class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-3194″

    http://harrythehandyman.wordpress.com/

    Posted by harrythehandyman | November 5, 2010, 23:20
  43. You could try setting Panos’ code into a div:
    <div align="center"><div style="width:150px;height:150px;border:1px solid #c30a0f;">[gigya src="http://www.clocklink.com/clocks/0005-red.swf&quot; flashvars="TimeZone=UnitedKingdom_Belfast" width="150" height="150" wmode="opaque" bgcolor="ffcccc" ]</div></div>

    Viewed in FireFox and Safari, the border is complete. We’ll hope he has some other idea.

    Posted by Tess | November 6, 2010, 02:49
  44. OOPS! The HTML Converter didn’t convert the gigya code. Anyway, you get the idea?

    Posted by Tess | November 6, 2010, 02:51
  45. @Harry

    This:
    class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-3194″
    is for one particular image uploaded to your blog.
    For a div you’d write this only:
    class=”aligncenter”

    But this is new-style HTML while Andreas09 is an old theme. To center an object you need the version Tess suggested.

    And as Tess said, there’s no problem with the border in FireFox or Safari (or Opera, or any other decent browser): sorry, your complaints to Microsoft!

    In all I’d say look for a different clock.

    @Tess

    The opening square bracket isn’t a functioning HTML symbol, so the converter leaves it untouched: you need to replace it with the corresponding HTML entity yourself.

  46. Hi Panos
    Im kinda new to the blog world, and quiet confused, im tryin to add a widget to my blog, that shows the current time of a specific city(hometown) in addition to a weather widget, plus how can i upload audio and video straight to my blog without upgrading nor using youtube or flicker

    cheers mate, i know im asking for allot, but as I said, im still new to all these, and its really doing my head in
    cheers

  47. First of all I need a link to your blog.
    Re first question: you mean you’ve found such a widget and cannot figure out how to add it, or that you’re looking for such a widget and cannot find one?
    Re second question, is it clear to you that uploading to your blog and inserting in your posts are two different things?
    Start by studying these docs:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/audio/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/
    Then come back with more details. (What audio, what video? Your own or not? Hosted where?)

  48. hello, i got some questions

    1. i.ve recently hotlinked clock image from csalim.com and several days later i got a warning: “please do not hotlink”, do you experience the same thing?

    2. how do you change your favicon? i heard that wordpress.com doesn’t allow any favicon customization.

    my blog is http://www.yuanadesukma.wordpress.com

    thank you, best regards,

  49. Hi (and thanks),

    1. No, I’ve never seen this, and it sounds absurd. Was there any explanation?

    2. I’m not sure if you mean the user pic or the blog pic. Anyway you can change both – see notes at the end of this post:

  50. Thank you for your response,

    1. I already contacted wp support, and still waiting response, and now i switched to clocklink.com

    2. no, i mean favicon, the very small picture 16×16 pixel in the left of your address in the browser (yours said w1), it seems i can’t change it anyhow, i searched and found that there is no way you can change it, but it seems that you can change it. does this only happen recently and long ago wp.com allows custumisation of favicon?

    PS: if you’re not sure about favicon, google will help you of course

    thanks (again) ^_^

    Posted by yuan ade sukma, MD | May 11, 2011, 01:54
  51. You’re welcome!

    But it seems you didn’t check the post I linked to. As you can see there, a) I know what a favicon is (but many users confuse it with the avatar, that’s why I asked), b) you change your blog’s favicon (WP calls it blavatar) in Settings>General.

    Posted by Panos | May 11, 2011, 15:52
  52. hello, I already changed my blavatar, but the favicon’s not changed, only the picture at the top of my blog is changed, already cleared my browser cache,

    Do i have to contact wordpress support for special permission? or i just wait and eventually it will change?

    thanks

    you can check my blog here http://www.yuanadesukma.wordpress.com

  53. oh, thank you, i searched blavatar in google and came up with this link
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/avatars/blavatars/#upload-a-blavatar

    i’ll try it soon couldnt do it without you, thanks

    oh and about clock widget, i already received answer from wordpress support that hotlinking shouldn’t be a problem

    Posted by yuan ade sukma, MD | May 12, 2011, 04:08
  54. a) As I said, the warning was absurd: those clocks can only show up via hotlinking, and they are free so you’re not violating any copyright rules or whatever.

    b) No you don’t need any permission for the favicon/blavatar either. But it may take a day or so for the new one to show up.

  57. Hi! It has started with WP just some days ago and I sould like to fit up with some useful widget, especially a clock. Yesterday I built in my sidebar an online clock excellently, it worked and I was happy. (posts are only for testing there yet) The pretty shortcode was this:
    [gigya src="http://www.worldtimeserver.com/clocks/wtsclock001.swf" flashvars="color=657B91&wtsid=HU" wmode="transparent" width="130" height="130" ]
    In the sourcecode of the page I can see the appropriate html code till now.
    And now some minutes ago my beautiful clock has disappeared and a text is there instead: “No hotlinking please”
    What happened? The WP does’n allow the gigya shortcodes any more from now?
    I am disappointed and unhappy. The WP has so many restriction, so I should like rather to leave the WP alone but I have to begin posting for a cooperation with another site :-(

    Posted by evitae | May 26, 2011, 23:36
  58. And now it has appeared again. I don’t understand. I wonder if the WP is reliable or not….? If I make some great thing to my blog with hard work today, the WP can take it away the next day? Then can not we know when it will appear or disappeared? This is not a good business. If something is not reliable for free, how I could purchase any premium features? Nonsense.

    Posted by evitae | May 27, 2011, 00:55
  59. Hi again Panos. I’m having trouble figuring out how to convert the rather complicated embed code from Worst Terrorist Video Ever | Cracked.com. Could I ask you to give it a try for me, and perhaps return the gigya shortcode via textsnip?

    Posted by IzaakMak | May 27, 2011, 01:10
  60. @evitae:

    “No hotlinking please” must have been a temporary glitch, because it’s absurd: these gadgets can only show up via hotlinking, and they are free, so you’re not breaking any copyright rules or whatever. And it comes from the widget’s side, so don’t blame WP for this “unreliability” or “nonsense”.

    @IM:

    http://textsnip.com/6ce792

    Your question should have been posted here (that’s where the instructions are):

  61. @Panos:

    Very thanx for your reply and explanation. I’m very sorry for suspecting the WP. But my excuse that I built this clock gadget into my another blog long ago and it has worked there for years without any problem (e-vita.blog.hu/). Anyway, I’m going to complain at the support of worldtimeserver to clear the problem.
    Thanx, Panos, for your great works! Have a good time :-)
