The Gallery format as custom excerpt

Some themes support custom excerpts on index pages – see The Excerpt function.

But now, if you need custom excerpts on your index pages, you can create them in the following themes too:

Dusk to Dawn *
Fruit Shake
Liquorice *
Matala *
Mystique *
Next Saturday *
Pink Touch 2
Rusty Grunge *
Selecta *
Skeptical *
Toolbox *
Twenty Eleven
Twenty Ten
Vertigo *

← Index pages = main posts page plus category and other archive pages.

← As mentioned in my post on excerpts, custom excerpt includes no excerpt at all (post title only), if you type nothing but a space in the Excerpt field.

← Chateu needs to be included here only if you have selected the “detailed” layout option in Appearance > Theme Options.

← Themes marked with the asterisk = no automatic read-more tab on the excerpt (so, to be taken to the complete post, you’ll either rely on clicking on the title or add a manually created link).

To create the custom excerpt if you’re using one of these themes,
a) Excerpt module: add content (content can include HTML, but not shortcodes),
b) Format module: select Gallery.

But! For a regularly looking excerpt, the post must have no images “attached” to it; that is, no images uploaded from your computer via the Add an Image tool of that post.

So, if your post is to have images, you must resort to one of these options:
• Upload the images via Media > Add New, insert them via the Add an Image tool of the post editor (clicking “Media Library” instead of “From Computer”).
• Upload and insert the images in a draft post (or any post with no gallery or slideshow), cut and paste their code from HTML editor to HTML editor.
• Upload the images via Media > Add New, copy their URLs, work out the appropriate code in the HTML editor (if you are experienced in coding).
• Insert the images via the Add an Image tool of the post editor (clicking “From URL” instead of “From Computer”), using the URLs of images hosted elsewhere.

← If you’re not seeing these modules while on the post editor screen, click Screen Options to activate them.

← Explanation: The Gallery post format is designed to indicate that the post is a gallery of images. When you upload the images via the Add an Image tool of the post editor and select the Gallery format, the result on your index pages will be a ‘special’ excerpt: a sample image and an automatically created note on the number of images contained in the gallery (examples here and here). No images uploaded this way? no sample image or auto note.

Quite clever. I’ve posted an example on agallerydemo. If it’s OK, feel free to edit my comment and link it, but remember that on that blog I’m constantly changing themes.

  3. Thanks Jen. Link to your demo blog:

@श्रेया: I’m not sure which part of it you don’t understand.

On the main posts page of the blog (and only in the themes that support these features):

    • A standard post will display the content of the post.
    • A standard post with content added to the Excerpt box of the editor will display the content of the Excerpt box.
    • A gallery format post with images attached to it will display a sample image and the note “this gallery contains N photos”, and if you add content to the Excerpt box, it will display that as well. Examples here:

    • A gallery format post without images attached to it, but with content added to the Excerpt box, will display the content of the Excerpt box alone.

  4. But you can’t get rid of the small “gallery” over the actual title.. am I right? Or is there a way?

  5. (Ah, by the way: I’m using the twenty-eleven theme…)

  6. Yes you’re right, you cannot (unless you have the paid Custom Design upgrade, that is). But that only applies to 2011 (which I don’t consider a good theme, for various reasons), not to all themes that support the gallery post format.

By the way, you need to correct your username link: the URL you’ve typed doesn’t exist.

  7. Hey there! Thx for your quick answer! too bad isn’t it?!

And by the way, the URL is correct, but the page isn’t online yet ;)
cause of the nice problem that you can’t change your blog address at the moment…

  8. You’re welcome.

Ah yes, the nice new WP quirks (because WP has a mania for changing things all the time)… Sorry, WP gave me the doesn’t exist message and suggested that maybe I was looking for, so I thought you’d made a typo.

  9. Haha true true… I have another short question which I would like to ask (now, that we’re sort of in a conversation and you seem pretty skilled in that whole WP-Stuff ;)) Isn’t there a code that you can put into your post, so that your excerpt is shown also at the format “standard”. Pretty off-topic but maybe you have a clue.

I hope you get what I try to describe… :D

  10. Depends on the theme: some themes support custom excerpts, some don’t. See here:

  11. Apparently a complete no-go on Bouquet to the point that even the regular text doesn’t show up. See my 2 comments in the forums.

  12. And they’ve changed something yet again. Now it pulls in the only image attached to that post, whereas before it was just a blank space.Unfortunately, no time to check further right now.

  13. Usually I check everything I need for my theme related posts as soon as a new theme is launched. It’s easy: I’ve got a list of all the things I need to check, and a series of posts designed for that purpose in my test blog, so it only takes me about half an hour. But updating all the theme related posts here isn’t equally easy, so usually they lag behind. I have noted down all the data I need for both Bouquet and Brand New Day but haven’t incorporated them into the posts yet.

As far as this post is concerned, Bouquet doesn’t enter the list: no custom excerpt (and it’s not the only theme that behaves so). As for its gallery post format in general, I checked again now, since you say something was changed: gallery post format on front page displays one of the images attached to the post, image selected randomly.

I don’t understand part of your forum post: “changed from Gallery toUncategorized”? What does a post format have to do with a post category?

    Posted by Panos | November 13, 2011, 15:19
  14. I really must stop experimenting late night…or at least stop posting about it.

Just switched the gallery demo blog back to Bouquet. Have a look at the front page. In other themes that don’t display an excerpt, the post text appears. In Bouquet nada on the front page.

  15. Well I wouldn’t bother but if you wish you can report it to the theme team. You remember: when we reported similar issues, Ian had them fixed.
