Vertigo supports ten different post formats (selected in the Format module of the post editor): standard, aside, status, chat, image, gallery, quote, link, audio, video. Each one meant for different types of content, each one visually differentiated on the main posts page – subtly or not.
Note: no matter what the post format, the post metadata (date, author, categories & tags) are displayed only when you hover over the left background area.
| Standard Regular post – default styling: title, content, comments tab. Horizontal decorative lines (right). |
![]() |
| Aside For brief snippets of text (similar to a Facebook note update). Horizontal decorative lines (right). No post title (symbol at left works as link to single post view). |
![]() |
| Status For short update messages (similar to a Twitter status update). Vertical decorative lines plus author avatar (left). No post title (symbol at left works as link to single post view). |
![]() |
| Chat For chat transcripts. Each paragraph enclosed in a grey “bubble” frame, bubbles pointing left and right in turn. |

| Image For a single image, with or without text. Image enclosed in grey frame. Rest of content normal. No post title (symbol at left works as link to single post view). |
![]() |
| Gallery One thumbnail plus note on number of images contained in the gallery. Content other than the gallery not displayed – unless you use a custom Excerpt. Horizontal decorative lines (right). |
![]() |
| Quote Larger font size. Bar and arm image (plus non-linking post title) below post. Symbol at left works as link to single post view. Vertical decorative lines (right). |

Thank you so much for these examples Panos. That makes them really clear!
Posted by Julia | July 14, 2011, 10:47Wow – a comment five minutes after I published the post!
Yes, I hope it makes them clear – especially since the relevant Support doc doesn’t:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/
(“list of all supported formats” containing three of the ten…)
Posted by Panos | July 14, 2011, 10:56Again, a great post filling a real need. Thanks so much! (And Twenty Eleven is curiously missing from the list of themes supporting post formats…http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyeleven/ )
Posted by Jennifer | July 14, 2011, 12:32Thanks Jen. The post is primarily about Vertigo, because of the fancy graphics, but I guess it can also serve as a more general guide to post formats.
Posted by Panos | July 14, 2011, 14:42Addendum: 2011 curiously added to the list…
Posted by Panos | July 23, 2011, 04:32Yes, that Support Doc was finally updated, but they’ve still yet to update the post formats Support Doc.
Posted by Jennifer | July 23, 2011, 18:58Such a great helpful blog !
Posted by Kate | July 23, 2011, 22:32@Jen: Yeah… I guess I’ll write my own, and link to this post as an example.
Posted by Panos | July 24, 2011, 01:46@Kate: Thanks!
Posted by Panos | July 24, 2011, 01:51When I post all of my posts show on the home page. Can anyone give me a little guidence? Thanks.
Posted by Jim Thomas | October 8, 2011, 21:01Not all – ten of them. Older ones will show up when you click “Older” at the bottom of your front page. The default is 10 posts per page: you can change that in Settings>Reading.
Posted by Panos | October 8, 2011, 21:27Panos. Thanks for your help before. Another question. When you want to forward a post via email the font color is white on white when you enter the email address and security code making the type essentially invisible. Is there a wasy to change that?
Posted by Jim Thomas | October 17, 2011, 21:37You’re welcome.
That white on white doesn’t happen in other dark themes, so it’s probably an oversight in this particular theme. You can’t change it yourself: what you should do is report it in the Themes section of the wp.com forums. The WP theme team monitor this section regularly so they can be alerted about such things and fix them. In the meantime, the only solution when you have to forward via mail is to temporarily change the settings/preferences of your browser to displaying colors you prefer instead of the actual ones.
